Honoring the Heroes of Vimy Ridge
Today, on Vimy Ridge Day, my heart is particularly heavy with respect and gratitude. As the daughter of a Canadian military father and with my French origins, this day holds a profound significance for me.
On the dawn of April 9, 1917, united under a single command, the Canadian Corps overcame sleet, mud, and relentless gunfire to secure a victory at Vimy Ridge that was thought impossible. Their bravery, sacrifice, and success not only marked a turning point in the Great War but also a defining moment for Canada on the world stage.
We remember the over 15,000 Canadian soldiers who launched the assault under the cover of darkness, facing fearsome machine gun fire, and the more than 10,600 brave souls who paid the ultimate price or were wounded in the four-day battle. Their triumph over Vimy Ridge, once deemed an impregnable fortress by allied forces, stands as a testament to their courage and a pivotal moment in our history.
We will honor and we will remember them.
