Celebrating National Flag of Canada Day: A Symbol of Unity and Pride

Today, we commemorate National Flag of Canada Day! 🍁

Did you know that 59 years ago, our iconic red and white maple leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill? This moment marked a pivotal chapter in Canadian history, as the flag quickly became a symbol of unity, pride, and shared values for all Canadians.

Before 1965, Canada’s flag was the Red Ensign, which had been used unofficially for over 100 years. The desire for a distinct, unifying national flag that represented the diverse culture, geography, and values of Canada was strong. Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson played a key role in the flag’s creation. After much debate and discussion, the new flag was finally unveiled on February 15, 1965.

The red and white colors of the flag reflect Canada's historical ties to both France and Britain, while the maple leaf symbolizes the natural beauty of our land, as well as the long-standing association of the maple leaf with Canadian heritage, dating back to the 18th century.

Since its raising, the flag has flown proudly across the country, symbolizing the unity of our people and the ideals of peace, inclusivity, and freedom. Every time we see the maple leaf flying high, it reminds us of the great diversity and strength that define Canada as a nation.

Join us in celebrating this symbol of Canadian pride and reflect on the values that make our country truly exceptional.
