National Human Trafficking Awareness Day - February 22, 2024
Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about this pervasive and devastating crime. Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide, with an estimated 24.9 million victims of forced labor and sexual exploitation. In Canada, the RCMP reports that human trafficking is a growing issue, with a significant increase in cases over the past decade, particularly involving young women and girls.
Protecting individuals from human trafficking is not just about enforcement; it’s about providing support, preventing exploitation, and raising awareness. As a society, we must ensure that those who fall victim to this crime are protected and empowered to rebuild their lives.
This why I pushed forward my private member's Bill 41 - Protection from Coerced Debts Incurred in relation to Human Trafficking Act, 2023. This critical piece of legislation helps protect survivors by ensuring they are not burdened by coerced debts as part of their trafficking. Bill 41 represents a significant step forward in safeguarding the rights of those affected and ensuring they have the support they need to heal.
