May 21st Update
Hi there,
COVID-19 Updates
It’s finally feeling like there is an end to the lockdown to look forward to and I hope you’re feeling as relieved as I am! On Thursday, the government announced its plan for the reopening of Ontario in three phases. While questions remain on the government’s plan for schools and for tackling the systemic issues highlighted by the pandemic, this new plan is certainly encouraging. Beginning tomorrow, select outdoor amenities, including splash pads, will reopen to allow us to enjoy the warm weather safely and while continuing to follow guidelines. Other changes to restrictions are expected to begin the week of June 14th, but that will depend on key health indicators. You can find more details about the plan here.
People aged 18 and over are now eligible to book an appointment for a COVID-19 vaccine. You can book an appointment through the province’s vaccination portal or through the booking processes of participating pharmacies. You can find the list of participating locations here. Please note that as the government has opened eligibility up to a large proportion of the population, patience may be required in order to secure an appointment. I am grateful to Ottawa Public Health for recognizing our neighbourhoods as areas with high rates of transmission. They have been coordinating targeted vaccine clinics to bring vaccines to our most vulnerable communities.
Working Together to Fight Racism in our Province
Over the last two weeks, my colleagues and I have been working to pass legislation to start taking steps towards fighting racism in Ontario.
On Wednesday, we debated my first Private Member’s Bill, the Equity Education for Young Ontarians Act. Developed in consultation with a variety of experts, I introduced this legislation to modernize the Ontario school curriculum to responsibly educate students of all ages on the impacts of colonization and the realities of the racial and social inequities that persist. The debate was an opportunity to share my motivation behind the Bill and argue for the government to support. You can watch my remarks on this above.
Unfortunately, the government came to the debate with their minds made up, believing that they are already doing enough to fight racism in the education system. It was incredibly disappointing that they refused to work even more on this important issue. You can read my full statement on their decision here.
I have also co-sponsored a Private Member’s Bill with my colleague MPP Coteau to amend The Anti-Racism Act 2017 to expressly address anti-Asian racism. If passed, it would codify into law that anti-Asian hate must be combated by this government. Our province needs a government that is committed without hesitation to fighting hate and we are trying our best to make them take action. I will be sure to provide an update on this PMB when I have one.
May Long Weekend
I know that many are looking forward to enjoying the beautiful weather this weekend, myself included. I want to remind everyone that we can enjoy the outdoors while following public health guidelines to keep our communities safe. Take in some sun while keeping 2 meters apart from others, wearing a mask when needed, and limiting non-distanced interactions to your own households. With the vaccine roll-out gaining momentum, it’s crucial that we keep doing our part to ensure it is as effective as possible. I understand feelings of frustration remaining isolated, and I thank you for doing your part in this collective effort.
The Canadian Tulip Festival has gone virtual and is a great way to make the most of the long weekend from home. For more on this and for more ideas of ways to enjoy the long weekend safely, check out this article by the City of Ottawa.
Take care,
Lucille
